This is one of the places in the world that is a must see. The Grand Canyon is a steep-sided canyon carved by the Colorado River in Arizona, United States. The Grand Canyon is 277 miles (446 km) long, up to 18 miles (29 km) wide and attains a depth of over a mile (6,093 feet or 1,857 meters). Nearly two billion years of Earth’s geological history have been exposed as the Colorado River and its tributaries cut their channels through layer after layer of rock while the Colorado Plateau was uplifted/ Since that time, the Colorado River has driven the down-cutting of the tributaries and retreat of the cliffs, simultaneously deepening and widening the canyon.
My wife and I have hiked in the Grand Canyon several times. It is a great achievement to hike the Grand Canyon from the north rim to the south rim in one day. Out of the 5 million visitors to the GC each year only a very small fraction, maybe just a few hundred at most travel rim to rim in one day. It is about 24 miles from the north rim to the south rim. If you are in great physical shape it can take you between 11 and 15 hours to make the trip. What makes the trip a challenge is the elevation change which is about 6,093 feet or 1,857 meters. The last time that my wife and I did the rim to rim challenge it took us 854 minutes as shown on our Fitbit watch with a total of 59.303 steps.
If you wish follow in our footsteps, then do your research and make sure you are ready for the challenge. IF you should need to be airlifted out of the Grand Canyon, it could cost you well over $5,000
